The Power of Social media In Gaming

In 2017, some would say we are in full social media mode. With sites like YouTube and Twitter, people usually go to a social media site to find out the latest news on what they deem important. How does this effect the gaming community? Today, we will dive deep and figure out how powerful social media is to the gaming community, seeing all the positives and negatives social Media brings, and can it really give a game life, or destroy a game’s potential sales.

Before social media, Gamers either relied on bigger platforms like IGN, or they would look at the back of the game case and judge from there. But now that everybody can voice their opinions on social media, a lot of gamers will buy games that are getting praised, and the games that are that are getting trashed never see the light of Day by most gamers. “But Almighty, doesn’t that mean the games get the treatment they deserve?” A lot of the time no. You have games like Mass Effect, that got trashed on before the game Came out and I personally liked the game, and on the other side you have Games like Horizon that was Super hyped up by social media, that I personally dislike (I’m being nice by saying dislike shit trash for real).

On the topic of mass effect, before the game came out, a lot of people on Twitter and YouTube was ripping the game because of the facial animations. Not to say that the animations were nothing to worry about, but gamers took it way too seriously and judge the whole game on what they seen before the game released. So that leaves gamers like me, to see all the hate, and say “Hmm maybe I shouldn’t buy that game.” It took one person to actually judge the game based on gameplay (shoutout to Kofi) for me to pick up the game. The facial animation were still visible a problem, but the gameplay was fast and fun, while the game had a little bit of a difficulty level. The game received so much hate before the game came out that wasn’t accurate to how the game actually played.

Now on the other side of the coin, you have games like Horizon zero Dawn. Everybody on Twitter praising this game, even some saying it’s comparable to Witcher 3. So when I see all this praise, getting 9/10s, and witcher 3 comparisons, I thought “This game gotta be great!” Boy was I underwhelmed. The game Technically was great, Arrow work, the uses for the gadget where creative, and the stealth aspects were likable. But it was nowhere in the realm of Witcher 3. Game was easy fighting humans and when you’re fighting robots, the scanner tells you where to aim. And the story was laughable as well. There was little sense of urgency on the story and the side missions where glorified fetch quest. Witcher 3 side missions had stories and could link to the end of the game. I’m not the only one with this opinion either. Many other gamers believe that Horizon only got so popular because of the Release date. With very few games to play, horizon was able to stick out and grab gamers attention. When in reality, the game was just your average Open world game with RPG elements.

There is one more level that consumers don’t talk about. It’s the games like Titanfall 2 that are just simple out shined on social media. Titanfall 2 came out between Battlefield 1 and Call of duty. While everybody was talking about those two games people looked at Titanfall 2 as a second tier game, only picking it up if they could afford to get another game. This lead to Respawn admitting the game didn’t sell as well as they wanted it to, and this also left the Titanfall community wondering if they getting a third one. Titanfall 2 showed that no matter how successful the first game is, the sequel wasn’t going to sell unless people were talking about it like Gamers were talking about it when Titanfall 1 came out.

In conclusion, it seems that social media has a huge impact on games and how well they sell. Even if some want to argue that the Hardcore gaming community is small, it’s shown that the Hardcore gaming community can push sales Just by word of mouth. Look at games like Rainbow 6 siege that started out poor and then picked up after hardcore gamers gave it a pass.
